Quarter Recap - Q3 2024

Sep 30, 2024

The last three months have been crucial in shaping Surge's mission of scaling Bitcoin and unlocking a new era of the BTCFi economy. At Surge, we strongly believe in building what the market wants! A majority of my time, this quarter was spent in product roadshows, talking to the community and supporters, iterating on the product roadmap, and aligning with what the market wants. Your role in this journey is invaluable, and our commitment to you and the community remains unwavering.

I am excited to share the recap of this quarter and how we are working towards materialising our vision to be the ultimate scaling solution for Bitcoin. Here are the main themes for this quarter -

  • The MetaLayer

  • Product Updates

  • Surge Litepaper (alpha)

  • Partnerships

  • Product roadshow and events

The MetaLayer - Surge's Role in Scaling Bitcoin

Early this quarter, we realized how calling ourselves a rollup-as-a-service was boxing us into a narrow domain and straying away from our vision of being the scaling solution for the Bitcoin ecosystem. After a good brainstorm post multiple product roadshows, the answer was clear: Surge is not just a RaaS startup; it is the ultimate layer that will enable Bitcoin scaling for teams building a rollup, dApp, or metaprotocols.

The Surge team is thrilled about this new direction and can't wait to present you with "Surge—An Ultimate MetaLayer to scale Bitcoin."

Product Updates

Our first roadmap release went live in July. We observed the Bitcoin ecosystem needed more essential tooling for developers to build and experiment in the space. At Surge, we did the following releases to align with developers' interests to add value to the Bitcoin ecosystem.

  1. Playground

Playground is a place for Bitcoin dev tools, which includes a custom signet, wallet, explorer, and more. We launched it at ETHCC Brussels.

  1. BRIEF: Bitcoin Rollup Inscription Estimated Fee

This is a tool dedicated to Bitcoin builders to estimate the potential cost of anchoring into security via inscription. Bitcoin as a DA layer sparked debate in the industry, and the tool above helps you research it deeply. Yes, it's tough to have all teams building and competing for the block space on Bitcoin, and it's limited to 4MB, which is not changing soon. While that's the core problem we are solving at Surge, we put this tool out for teams to simulate themselves.

  1. Surge Litepaper (alpha)

This is a critical milestone for the Surge team. We are super excited to start sharing the lite paper among a closed group and iterating on their feedback. We can't wait to release our whitepaper to the public in the coming months.

  1. Partnerships

We forged a few critical partnerships this quarter, and they are a massive step toward fast tracking our goals.

We are super excited to be working with partners, and we will be adding a few more in the coming months to add strategic value to Surge and help it achieve its business goals.

  1. Product roadshow and events

This quarter was filled with a bunch of roadshows, which helped us connect with the community and conduct in-person discussions and demonstrations to shape Surge's mission. My team and I have been busy hitting events and showcasing what we are building.

Here is the list of events and demonstrations we did during this quarter

  • ETHCC Brussels ( 8th - 12th July )

  • Bitcoin 2024 Nashville ( 25th - 27th July )

  • Korean Blockchain Week ( 2nd - 6th September )

  • Token2049 Singapore ( 16th - 20th September )

During Token2049, Surge presented its new messaging of being the MetaLayer of Bitcoin and received an overwhelming response. We gave a Keynote address on Modular & L2 Day and also presented on BTC Scaling Day. Below is a recap video of Token 2049 week in Singapore.

Next Steps

Our pre-seed funding efforts have taken a backseat this quarter as we got busy reshaping our mission. We will be pushing a dedicated update on this soon, so stay tuned 👀
